Domains vs. Social Media

Yesterday a tweet caught my eye. It appears that some people are selling their social media handle and the millions of followers. While at first I think it’s brilliant, I realize and know that social media platforms are unstable and have been flawed since inception.

What am I talking about?

It all started years ago with Facebook. One day while smoking some cigars and drinking bourbon, the FB marketing team stumbled upon new  a great idea: create a FB page for your business so you can grow your brand! The premise was that a FB page for your business was free, easy to setup and you get to engage your clients etc. Millions of companies switched to this idea including Fortune 500 companies. Seems like everybody back then paid little importance to domain names, websites, SEO and got a FB business page. It all sounds great right? Well it does until you realize that yes the page is free and easy to setup, but your existing clients and new clients won’t find you! You have to PAY FB to advertise your business on their platform. Huge Corporations and other big companies started redirecting their BILLIONS of visitors to a 3rd party aka middle man platform called FB. “Find us on FB..etc”

But wait it gets better…

With a lot more businesses switching to a FB page  the competition for FB Ads got fierce and you had to increase your Ad budget to compete. At the same time FB profits were skyrocketing. A business is about money right? Surprise! the FB marketing team had another amazing idea! They busted out the fine Cuban cigars this time and switched to expensive Patron tequila 🙂 – Hey this free FB page idea is paying off like crazy, why don’t we archive and collect people’s/business data and SELL it to other companies. Sounds fantastic??!! Well they did do it, and my privacy and your privacy went up in smoke. Rumor has it that social media platforms can influence Presidential elections. That’s the world we live in folks… I won’t get into that one.

I will wrap it up now:

Fast forward to 2018-2019 companies stopped promoting and pushing FB pages and other social media. Instead all TV commercials, Billboards, radio ads etc are now promoting their websites: Nerdwallet.com, VRBO.com, Chewy.com etc instead of “Find us on FB, or find us on X platform etc”.

I am not saying you should drop social media activity,  but I am going to ask you this:

1.Why send your clients and redirect your traffic to a 3rd party platform?

2.Why risk your privacy and others privacy online?

3.Why depend on a 3rd party platform that can change their rules as often as they want?

4. Why jeopardize your business while depending on social media platforms?

5.Why not be in full control ??

and I can continue but I will stop…

I am suggesting this:

Acquire the right .com name and build your brand. If anything YOU will be in full control of your BRAND and DATA!
